The Chester May Festival is the highlight of the year of Flat racing at Chester, with the valuable Chester Cup being one of the feature races. The Chester Cup, run over two and a quarter miles, was won by Trip To Paris in 2015 before he won the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, and plenty of other stars have emerged at the meeting over recent years. Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien often uses the Chester Vase as a stepping stone for his Derby horses, and he last completed the double with Ruler of The World in 2013. US Army Ranger won the Chester Vase in 2016 but was just touched off at Epsom, and in 2017 Wings of Eagles was second in the race before going on to win The Derby.

CHESTER RACECOURSE MAP 3c5k40
Left handed, very sharp. A circular course that's only just over a mile round, it's on the turn almost throughout and has a run-in of under two furlongs, heavily favouring those that race to the fore as it's easy to find trouble with little time to recover. A high draw at Chester is a major disadvantage, even in middle-distance races, and particularly so in large fields.
